The next day Pippi flew East to give the Don and Giorgio a full report. âBig Tim was crazy,â he said. âHe bribed the caterer who supplies the food and drink to the teams in the Super Bowl. They were going to use drugs to make the team they bet against weaker as the game went on. The coaches and players would notice even if the fans didnât, and the FBI, too. You were right, Uncle, the scandal would have set back our program maybe forever.â
âWas he an idiot?â Giorgio asked.
âI think he wanted to be famous,â Pippi said. âRich wasnât enough.â
âWhat about the others involved in the scheme?â the Don asked.
âWhen they donât hear from the Rustler, theyâll be scared off,â Pippi said.
Giorgio said, âI agree.â
âVery good,â the Don said. âAnd my grandson, did he perform well?â
It seemed an offhand remark, but Pippi knew the Don well enough to understand that this was a very serious question. He answered as carefully as he could but with a certain purpose.
âI told him not to wear his hat on this operation in Vegas and L.A. He did anyway. Then he didnât follow the script of the operation. We could have got the information with more talk but he wanted blood. He cut the guy to pieces. He cut off his cock and nuts and breasts. That wasnât necessary. He enjoys doing it and that is very dangerous for the Family. Somebody really has got to talk to him.â
âIt will have to be you,â Giorgio said to the Don. âHe doesnât listen to me.â
Don Domenico pondered this a long time. âHeâs young, heâll grow out of it.â
Pippi saw that the Don would not do anything. So he told them about Danteâs indiscretion with the movie star the night before the operation. He saw the Don flinch and Giorgio grimace with distaste. There was a long silence. Pippi wondered if he had gone too far.
Finally, the Don shook his head and said, âPippi, you have planned well, as always, but you can set your mind at rest. You will never have to work with Dante again. But you must understand, Dante is my daughterâs only child. Giorgio and I must do our best with him. He will grow wiser.â
